Design Characteristics
Each of the modules can "talk" to the others. Relevant data shared among modules keeps all information current. For example, maintenance actions documented in the Maintenance Module are automatically relayed to the Machinery History sub-module.
Lightship's Askit! is designed to optimize equipment maintenance and ensure an appropriate level of vessel or plant readiness. It establishes a schedule of required maintenance tasks for each piece of maintainable equipment, and documents and tracks equipment maintenance history. It also incorporates consistent standards for equipment maintenance. Additional capabilities include:
- Tracking of spare parts requisitions
- Lube oil sample label printing and results
- Preparation of casualty reports
- Tracking of regulatory body inspection requirements (such as the ABS, USCG, OSHA, etc.)
- Contributes toward a reduction in equipment downtime and repair costs
- Ability to upload and view results of a vibration analysis program
- Ability to upload and view results of lube oil analysis on selected equipment

Automated tracking and reporting of planned and corrective maintenance significantly reduces required clerical effort. Additionally, Lightship's program automatically generates reports at the end of each month and provides an overview of maintenance status.
The Lightship Group's Experience
In 1985, Lightship began assisting the Military Sealift Command (MSC) in their move from a Navy 3M based PM system towards an integrated Condition Based Maintenance approach. MSC, with Lightship's assistance, has developed and installed a shipboard automated maintenance management system throughout the MSC Fleet. Lightship has been intimately involved in the program's development and has seen the many interim steps taken to achieve the current proactive status. The Condition Based Maintenance program is fully developed and has been successfully utilized by MSC for 12 years on over 70 vessels.
